Camping

This weekend we went camping at Lynx Lake for Me-Ma's birthday. It was so wonderful to be out of the heat and into the forest. We roasted hot dogs, made smores, did some fishing, and A LOT of hiking. Friday night daddy REALLY wanted to go fishing only the gates to the lake were closed so the only way down was to hike. So here was the plan: We will all (3 kids 2 adults, one baby in a backpack, and fishing gear) hike down to the lake (no idea of the distance) and when we get down there me-ma can drive us back to camp. So here we are at 8:00 at night hiking along the trail: painting the picture; narrow trail, one small flashlight, two scared brothers and one brave sister, and no idea where at the lake we were going to end up. The children were very excited and positive on the way there; Spencer was looking at all of the stars, Maggie was singing, and Matthew was excited to cast that line in and catch a fish. We finally made it to the end of the trail and followed a short section of road to arrive at the lake. When we got to the lake Me-Ma was already gone. So mom decided, well lets take a break and fish for an hour and than hike back. Thats when dad informed us that we were going to use Me-Ma's bait. So no fishing!! The whines, the screams, and the how are we going to get back. Well we took a short break and than began the trek back through the forest. Mom took turns with piggy back rides which boosted the morale but did not take away the fact that the children were UNHAPPY. Spencer didn't care much about the stars and for a brief moment thought that he may die, Maggie would try to sing but the destraction caused a loss in necessary focus leading to painful tumbling, and Matthew just could not believe that as parents we would put them through such strenous activity. So as parents we did what all parents would do we took on positive attitudes and than yelled and than tried to be supportive and than got frustrated and finally ended the trail with primary songs. What memories we create for ourselves, our first Mecham family night hike.

LOL So funny. Its like we are leading lives on the same unlucky lane. It makes me feel better to know that we are not the only ones who seem to travel through life under the proverbial black cloud singing primary songs to distract and pretend that we aren't under the little gray rain cloud. Thanks for this post. We are normal!! YAY US!! And YAY YOU!!!

Wow, sounds like fun! We had a few trips like that in the past. Glad it all worked out anyway.

I admire your fortitude for forge a trail in the dark in the first place. It's a bummer for the kids that they didn't get to go fishing after all that though. It is a memory that will live with them for the rest of their lives though for better or worse ;o)
